Went out and played water boy again today. It’s actually pretty relaxing teaching science classes in the back of a pickup in downtown Phoenix. I’ve been able to find shady spots between buildings, so the 108 degree weather didn’t seem too bad. Added some protein bars to the coolers and had a lot more interactions with people which was cool.

Met lots of different people, saw a lot of positivity and smiles. People are angry but still have hope. The police did a good job of standing back and letting everyone do their thing. I don’t know if it’s because they have better leadership, or they know half of us are armed (everyone has guns in AZ, reg ardless of political affiliation ). I’m pretty upset by the stuff I see happening in other cities. Not sure what these cops think their end game is. Shit ain’t going back to how it was, that’s for sure. I wish everyone nothing but peace an happiness.

When my head is in a good spot, I’ll carry a song in my chest all day. This is what I carried today.

I’d like to do this but not really sure how to go about it. Do you just find a place to set up shop and start handing out wat er bottles? I guess it must be different from place to place though.

Good on ya, man. Think I’ll load up some flats of water in my little truck for upcoming marches too. This was tonight, 3rd one this week.

Al l peaceful and good vibes, with youth leaders from the local Uni & elsewhere. After the dipshit local PD fired teargas and flashbangs into peaceful protesters Monday night they backed way the fuck off. But they also had a damn army at every freeway ramp within miles since a m arch closed 101 Monday afternoon too.

I grew up in Phoenix and know the city very well. I knew most people would be arriving via light rail or bus, and found a spot between those stations and the police HQ and state capitol.  I knew that’s where most people would be passing through. There were also people walking around with portable coolers keeping protestors hydrated.

Be the change. This is infinitely more powerful than all the superficial hashtag bandwagoning  we see online.

a friend of my dads   was a cop in the next city over for 30 years. multiple times he noted how much things had changed, from when he used to walk around for 8 hours, vs just driving around when he retired. Theres a vulnerabilty when you’re out by yourself. He went years before he had an unreliable radio. It i s in yours and everyone interest to deescalate a situation.

“Not sure what these cops think their end game is.”

I would guess they aren’t thinking long term. “when your only tool is a hammer. everything looks like a nail.”

“ It is in yours and everyone interest to deescalate a situation.”

The ball is in the cop’s court now.

I would be very interested to learn more about this, the shift away from on-foot beat cops in communities.

I’ve heard lots of people, online and in person, reminisce after it. It also seems to be the way it is still done in some other developed nations. I don’t know if it’s a genuinely better method of policing, but it seems more intuitive.

I’m sure there are a numerous different and intersecting reasons for the shift from beats to cruisers, one of which being a cruiser allows the police to do more with less (I assume). I also understand that we can’t just snap out fingers and make beat cops the standard again.

If your only interaction with someone is in a high stress, negative situation i cant see how each group wouldn’t view the other as terrible. With more urban and suburban sprawl i wonder if its impossible to go back to that.

then you have the road rage angle where you stop seeing the officer and only see the car, associating one with another.
